About
Vera Svava (B. CA) is a steel and hardwood sculptor based in New York, NY.
They have received their BFA in Fine Art from Parsons School of Design, and has exhibited in shows including at The National Arts Club, NY (2025), John St. Gallery, NY (2025), and 25 E. Gallery (2024, 2025).
Vera is fascinated by method, material, and properties to which method and material abide by. Vera studies forms, looking at how the steel unveils mass, weight, gravity, tension, force, balance, and monumentality. Their current focus is on manipulating carbon steel sheets into abstract sculptures. They are in constant dialogue with the material itself, as they have to listen to and allow matter to impose its form on form itself, while overriding its natural movement. As a result, each sculpture is a collaboration between Vera and the will of the metal.
Vera doesn’t focus on imagery, rather, they concern themselves with actions and movement. By embracing the drama and intensity of steel, Vera is looking to both expand and delineate space and explore the ways in which material properties change people's awareness of and in it.
